Good Athletes vs Great Athletes

Today's question is straight outa my DMs- "What separates your great athletes from your good athletes"


It starts with defining athleticism; to me, athleticism is the perfect combination of speed, explosive abilities, strength and agility. Athleticism looks smooth and effortless despite the raw power and aggression driving it. Not to be all moody here but it’s like the ocean, calm on the surface with a powerful driving force. You know it when you see it.

Now that we have some context for athleticism, we can differentiate good athletes from great athletes on how they work to improve those qualities. It needs to be mentioned that genetics play a pretty big role in your athletic potential. If your parents leave you 50 million dollars and mine bless me with 20 dollars and a toothpick, I might be able to catch up to you at some point, but I’m going to have to work 100 times harder than you to get there. For some, athleticism is gifted at birth and for others, it’s earned work out-by-work out.

What separates the great athletes from the good athletes is attention to detail and mindset. The great athletes come to the gym hydrated, fed and well rested. The great athletes are able to put 100 percent focus into what we are working on, they leave distractions at the door. Some aspects of speed training can be very technical and require a lot of focus to improve, the great athletes are able to make these adjustments because they have that focus.

The good athletes show up fueled, reared and focused most of the time while the great athletes show up ready to go all of the time. There isn’t a huge difference between good and great, it's all about the details.
