“It’s almost time for that New Year New Me BS, I’d like to assure everyone that I will be the same sarcastic asshole I have always been”- widespread, popular Instagram meme (I guess that’s a meme?)
I write because words have meaning, words can literally inspire a feeling inside you. Well, that and the fact that my high school athletes mock my videos to such an extent that I have become insecure on camera! Words like religion, race, Trump, sports, Kardashian, politics can inspire red-hot feelings and emotions while other words or phrases can inspire malaise.
“New Years Resolution” inspires such a discomfort for me. Perhaps it’s the widespread use this time of year or it could be the equally popular use of gifs and memes that sarcastically mock resolutions. Either way, the concept is boring to me. When I hear or read anything about resolutions, I immediately associate it with a waste of time making a promise that will ultimately go unfulfilled.
“Priority” on the other hand inspires a very different emotion. Priority inspires a sense of urgency and importance. I consider priorities to be essential tasks or behaviors I must accomplish to live the life I want to live. I will accomplish the priorities I set for myself or my life will suck. It is very simple for me.
Take a sober second between now and that magic hour tomorrow night where we all suddenly become motivated, and consider how the word “resolution” impacts you. How does it make you feel? Does it inspire motivation and determination? If so, then setting some resolutions is a great option for you. If you are like me, and the word inspires boredom, mockery and sarcasm, you should consider attaching your goals for 2019 to a different word.
