Change is in the air.
I am not talking about the progress we are making as a society to combat racism, though that is much needed, I am talking about the progressive conditioning guidelines I have seen from a few of my athletes summer training programs.
Every summer, high school and college coaches send out summer strength and conditioning programs to their athletes and every summer it is more of the same; 100 burpees, 6 mile runs, sprints with very little recovery time, power cleans for sets of 10 reps. It almost seems like they placed a hundred random exercises in a hat and picked the summer program at random.
This summer, I have seen endurance training guidelines that closely resemble the needs of the sport. I have seen speed training guidelines that provide enough rest in between each sprint to actually IMPROVE speed.
We need more of this! This is progress!
